2019 Indoor National Finals

Hello again. Its report time for this year’s National Finals which were held at Newark Bowls & Boccia Club from 24th April.

Hunts had a strong representation in the finals.

I’ll report the competitions one at a time not in day or play order. I also understand that at the end of the week illness swept through the Newark club and the Hunts team and meant games were either given or subs were played. It all got a bit messy!!

First up is the Mens Singles. Joe Randall was our champion He started well beating Derbyshire in the 1st round 21-15. He then built on that victory and swept aside a Lincs player 21-14. In the semi final he faced Northumberland and it was a step too far Joe went out 21-6 to the eventual winner.

Ladies Singles Jane Baldwin represented us. A bye in the first round put her into the quarters where she made the most of it and beat Lincs 21-15. A semi final beckoned. Jane met Northumberland (this sounds familiar) she just lost out 21-16 to Northumberland.

Mens Senior Singles Barry Johnson lost out in the first round to Cleveland 21-9.

Ladies Senior Singles Jane Baldwin lost to Northants 23-10

Ladies Pairs Sophie Purell & Glenys Cousins started well beating North Cambs 19-7 but couldn’t get past Humberside in the quarters losing out 20-14.

Ladies Rinks Jane Baldwin, Maddie Leader Jenny Dymond lost to Northumberland 21-13.

We now enter what we are calling the Ed Elmore Zone. In this zone ladies and gentlemen we have a story of great success and painful sorrow. Success first :

Hunts have two new National Championship teams.

Mens Rinks, Ed Elmore Rob Elmore & Simon Leader overcame Cleveland 23-8 in round 1. North Cambs 24-15 in the quarterfinal. Durham 23-16 in the semis before thrashing Derbyshire in the final 22-10 To become National Champs 2019.

Not content with that Ed Elmore with Chloe & Nicky Brett in the Mixed Rinks and they swept to final success after beating Lincs 20-19 in round 1, Humberside 21-13 in the quarters, Cleveland didn’t bother them in the semi 20-6 and they then swept aside Nottinghamshire in the final 22-8. Another National Championship for Hunts.

Now for the sorrow. Ed hadn’t lost a game in the week (before deli bellygate) He had beaten Lincs in the Under 25 Singles 21-8. He then beat Northants 21-2 but had to give the semi final to Suffolk as he was too ill to play.

Mens Pairs Ed & Neil Swannell started well a bye in round 1 before beating Cleveland 17-11 in the quarter final but by the semi final on the Saturday Ed was ill. Tom Swanell subbed for him but the family connection couldn’t get them past North Essex going down 20-12.

Mixed Pairs It was a similar story Ed & Catherine Popple started really well brushing aside Lincs 18-3 then in the quarters they beat Notts 16-10. It looked to be opening up for them when Ed was ill. Tom stepped in again and it was a valiant effort but unfortunately they lost out in the semi final to Cleveland 19-14.

What could have been a history making effort for Ed ended behind a toilet door! But Hunts have 2 teams of

National finals winners. Four defeated semi finalists. So a decent showing from our little county.

Well done to Ed ,Nicky, Chloe, Rob & Simon.

Heres to next year.
