Indoor Finals Report 2022

Sunday March 6th HBF & HWBF Indoor County Finals.

It was finals day at Huntingdon Indoor. The day was divided into four sessions.

The first sessions saw four matches.

On rink 3 the Mixed Rinks final saw Rob Greenwood (St Ives) Maddie Leader (Sawtry) & Joe Randall (Brampton) take on a St Ives trio of Jane Baldwin, Trevor Dighton & Robert Jepson.

The early exchanges went the way of Joe Randall’s rink with a lead of 10-5 after 10 ends.

At 15 ends it was 14-9 to Joe’s rink. As the game closed out Joe and his rink managed to keep it under control and won 20-11.

On rink 4 the Mens 2 bowl rinks had Buckden trio Richard Stevens, Joseph Stevens & Mac May taking on the Eynesbury rink of Steve Gentle,Andy Walton & Barry Kitto.

This really was a game of two halves, the Buckden rink took a lead after picking up a 5 on the 4th end and led 11-5 after 10 ends. But unfortunately for them that was the last end they scored. The Eynesbury rink gradually took control and after 15 ends led 14-11. They continued their second half dominance and ended up winning 22-11.

Rink 4 saw the Ladies 4 wood singles final, Jorja Jackson (Needingworth) against Glynis Cousins (St Ives) both ladies exchanged shots and it was 5 all after 5 ends. Some controlled play from Jorja saw her pull away to lead 12-5 after 10 ends. The game was a well fought affair but Jorja kept her lead in tact and after 17 ends led 19-9. Glynis picked up a four on the 20th end but to no avail as Jorja closed the game out to win 21-14

Rink 6 had the Mens Pairs Ed Elmore & Neil Swannell (Brampton) playing Howard Shipp & Steve Farrant (Huntingdon). The game started quite evenly the score being 4 all after 5 ends. Howard & Steve started to get ahead and led at 10 ends 10-7. The next five ends saw the Huntingdon duo put on 8 shots to the Brampton duos 1 with a lead of 18-8. From ends 15-20 Steve & Howard scored four shots to Ed & Ians 5 which meant a win for Howard & Steve 22-13.

In Session 2 there were just two matches.

Rink 5 had the open Under 25 singles final Ross Martin v Mac May. Mac got away to a steady start and established for himself a nice lead. 7-2 after 8 ends. Ross managed to win the next two ends to make it 7-5. But then Mac went on a 7 end winning run extending his lead to 18-5.

Mac was bowling the ditch side really well and it gave Ross a problem he couldn’t find the answer to today. Mac managed to close out the game 21-7.

Rink 6 saw the Ladies Pairs, Jane Baldwin & Kathy Snitch (St Ives) taking on the Huntingdon pair of Karen Brugnoli & Nicky Verlander. The game started well for the St Ives duo, they led 10-5 after 10 ends. Despite swapping around, the Huntingdon pair couldn’t get it going today and Jane & Kathy stayed steady scoring every other end to take the match 19-9.

Session 3 had three singles matches.

On rink 4 the Ladies Senior singles Jane Baldwin (St Ives) playing Carole Hickey (Houghton & Wyton) Jane in her third game in a row got off to flying start and led 9-0 after 5 ends. Carole started to get her game together and got back to 11-5 after 10 ends. Jane regained the upper hand and pulled away to a 15-8 lead after 15 ends. Jane managed to close the game out winning 21-10.

Rink 5 had the Mens four wood singles Robert Jepson (St Ives) versus Steve Farrant (Huntingdon) It was a mammoth game. Robert got off to a steady start and led 4-1 at 5 ends. Swapping three’s the score was 10-6 in Robert’s favour after 10 ends. The game then switched to Steve and he picked up 8 shots in the next 4 ends to lead 14-10. The next 3 ends went with Robert with him scoring 5 shots without answer. To make it 15-14 to Robert. Ends 18 19 & 20 went to Steve scoring 5 more shots to lead 19-15. Robert wasn’t going down without a fight and he took the next 2 ends to get back to 18-19. The 23rd end was momentous, but unfortunately happened at the wrong end for the crowd to see it. Luckily for you I was marking and witnessed it all!!

Robert drew a wood two inches behind the jack, Steve drew a wood two inches in front of the jack, With Steve’s third wood he drew into his short wood and jammed the jack between his and Robert’s wood. Both bowls touching. Robert played his last bowl with a strategic draw in case Steve hit it. With Steve’s last wood he said ‘all or nothing’ and played just over draw weight into the head, it jammed the front bowl onto the jack which squeezed out sideways towards Robert’s wood. It looked like it hadn’t paid off for Steve and he would be one down when his wood slid around Robert’s bowl and fell in for one shot to Steve. Putting him ahead 20-18. The next end Robert held one shot with a wood 3 inches behind the jack Steve had two woods about 4 inches short. With his last wood Robert looked to draw to his wood to get 2 shots. He passed the two shorter woods but hit the jack onto his wood and it squeezed out to the side and he got just one shot to take it to 19-20. The final end saw Steve draw two good shots and Robert had to play into them but just misjudged it and it went by giving Steve Farrant the win 21-19. Epic, a pleasure to mark and a great game to watch.

Rink 6 didn’t do too bad either Trevor Dighton (St Ives) played Brian Hart (St I ves) in the Senior Men’s Singles. Brian scorched away to a 9-nil lead after 5 ends. Trevor fought back and got it to 10 all after 12 ends. A great drawing display by both players but Brian pulled away again and led 17-10 after 15 ends. Trevor tried to make a comeback but got to 16-19 when Brian drew two on the last end to win 21-16.

The last session of the day featured …..yes you’ve guessed it Jane Baldwin!! this time it was with Kathy Snitch & Sophie Purell (St Ives) playing Ladies 2 bowl rinks against Glynis Cousins (St Ives) Nicky Verlander & Jean Whittamore (both Huntingdon). The St Ives trio got off to a good start leading 10-6 at ten ends. But then the Verlander led trio got back into the match and it was 11 all at 15 ends. Swapping threes in the next few ends it was 16 all after 20 ends. A one end shoot out. Which was won by the St Ives trio to win the final 17-16.

The other game wasn’t bad either, the Mixed Pairs final. It had Buckden mother & son duo Juliet & Mac May playing Rob Greenwood & Karen Leader. The early exchanges went the way of the Mays and they led 13-6 after 10 ends. But then the wheels fell of and they only scored one shot in the next 6 ends giving the lead to Rob & Karen 19-14 at 16 ends. They then came to life again and scored two successive three’s to lead 20-19 at 18 ends. End 19 saw Rob and Karen score one to make it 20 all with 2 ends to go. Both scoring one each on those two ends meant after 21 ends it was locked at 21 all. An extra end beckoned to decide the winner. Mac & Juliet took the extra end to win the title 22-21 aet.

It was a well supported day and well organised as ever. Congratulations to our winners who will represent Hunts at the National EBF indoor finals at Newark over the week of 19th – 23rd April 2022.

Congratulations to Trevor and Bob and Jane for their hard work and brilliant organisation.
