Outdoor Finals Report 2022

HBF & HWBF FINALS DAY 2022

SUNDAY 17TH JULY

ST IVES BC

Whow! What a scorcher. The weather was great it was hot on the green but there was a bit of breeze which was a lifesaver. Lots of water was drunk and some great bowls played.

The first session saw six matches take place. On rink 1 was the Mens 2 wood singles final Matt Nickerson (Sawtry) versus Richard Wilson (St Ives) marked by my good self. It was a great match worthy of a final. Richard got away slightly leading by 6 at around halfway. Then Matt had five ends on the run where he got shot after Richard narrowly missed out with his last wood. The score got back to within 2 shots. Then Richard closed it out and ended up winning 21-18.

On rink 2 the Men’s Champion of Champions saw the first of Sawtry’s Toby Furzeland’s five finals versus Peter Hutchinson (Needingworth). Toby got off to a good start and led 9-1. Pete did manage to get back to within 5 shots but Toby handled a tricky rink better and ran out the winner 21-11.

Rink 3 had Men’s 2 Bowl Rinks. Buckden trio Richard Stevens, Joseph Stevens & Mac May took on Papworth trio Kane Phillips, sub Sly Crane & Bunny Johnson. Again a tight game at the start but gradually the Buckden trio managed to take control of the game and ran out winners 19-9.

Rink 4 had the Ladies 2 Bowl Singles, Sabrina Parnell (Brampton) playing Ali Wilson (Buckden) marked by ladies president Barbara Garwood. The game was well fought but Sabrina got away and ran out winner 21-9

Rink 5 saw the Hemingford husband & wife swap pairs….I mean Senior Mixed Pairs but you’ll see what I mean. Tony Chapman (Hemingford) was with Sandra Day(Somersham) and his wife Janet Chapman was with Peter Reason (both Hemingford). The game was good, some great bowling. A close match was eventually closed out by Tony & Sandra 22-16.

Out on rink 6 it was Buckden versus Ramsey in the Ladies Pairs. The Buckden Pair of Sandra Gentle & Karen Reid playing Ramsey ladies Gill Willis & Alison Yeoman. Another close game, some great close heads and good bowling came to a close with the Ramsey duo winning to go to Skegness 19-14.

Second Session had 4 matches.

On rink 1 the younger part of the newly crowned men’s 2 bowl rinks Joe Stevens & Mac May formed a pair in the U25 Open Pairs and they took on Sam Brugnoli and sub Jorja Jackson. The game was a revelation for Sam & Jorja, some great bowling put pressure on Joe & Mac from the start. But it wasn’t their game and even when they were on target the rubs didn’t go their way. After 13 ends the score was 18-3 to Sam & Jorja . Mac & Joe realised that it wasn’t to be and called it a day giving Sam & Jorja the win.

Rink 3 had Toby Furzeland’s second final along with Emma Gardiner (Sawtry) they competed the Mixed Pairs final against Steve & Sandra Gentle (Eynesbury & Buckden). The game, again as with all the finals, was well contested . The score was close until Toby & Emma pulled away and ended up winning 21-12.

Rink 4 had the Ladies 2 Bowl Rinks final Janet Chapman, Lynda Childs & Barbara Clutterbuck (all Hemingford) were versus Jane Baldwin, Pat Cook & Sophie Purell (all St Ives). The game started evenly until halfway and then things went the way of the Hemingford ladies who then closed out the game 22-11.

Rink 5 had the Men’s Secretaries Singles Barry Kitto (Eynesbury) against Trevor Dighton (St Ives) marked by my good self again. It got very hot during the session and it had an effect on the green and the players…..and the marker!! This game was close until halfway then Barry pulled away into a smart lead. Trevor tried a comeback but it wasn’t quite enough and Barry won 21-13.

Third session was hot hot hot. 5 matches.

Rink 1 had Ladies Senior Pairs. Nicky Hastings & Lynn King (Hemingford) against Jane Baldwin & Christine Morris (St Ives). A close game saw the St Ives come out on top 19-10 sending Christine to her first ever county title and first appearance at National finals.

Rink 2 saw the Men’s Pairs final Phil Swannell & Nick Perrin (Warboys) they were against Steve Gentle & Barry Kitto (Eynesbury). Two is a tricky rink and it showed in this game. The two teams however coped with it admirably. It was close as the ends ran down, but Steve & Barry came out on top 22-16.

Rink 3 the Ladies U25 Singles final had Jorja Jackson (Needingworth) versus Sophie Purell (St Ives). The game started with Sophie getting the better of the scoring and pulling ahead a little. Jorja couldn’t find her form from the previous session and Sophie capitalised on that and got the better of her running out 21-12 winner.

Rink 4 saw the Men’s 3 Bowl Rinks. The game was between Toby Furzeland, Sam Nickerson & Matt Nickerson (all Sawtry) against the recent 2 bowl rinks winners Richard & Joe Stevens & Mac May (Buckden). The game started quite level with both sides scoring freely. But with some very tight heads and very good bowling the game started to swing towards the Sawtry trio. They held on and ended up capping Toby’s 3rd title wining 22-9.

Rink 5 had an epic battle for the Ladies 3 Bowl Rinks. It was between a Ramsey trio Patsy Coles Jill Francis & Joanne Balmer against a Buckden trio of Juliet May, Sandra Gentle & Ali Wilson. The game seemed to be long and well fought. Tight heads and top quality bowls led to a win for Buckden 25-9

In session 4 it was all singles.

Rink 1 it was the Ladies Champion of Champion, Sabrina Parnell (Brampton) looking for her 2nd win of the day versus Emma Gardiner (Sawtry) also looking for her 2nd win of the day. It was a well bowled, well fought game played on a good rink. Emma managed to take the win and her second title 22-18.

Rink 2 saw the closest game of the day. The Mens 4 Bowl Singles final. Mac May (Buckden) against ex-national champ Robert Jepson (St Ives). The game was a cracker. Mac took an early lead 10-4 up at one point. Both players playing to the best of their abilities providing a great spectacle for the watching crowd. Eventually one player had to win and that honour went to Mac May 21-20.

On rink 4 Toby Furzeland was in his 4th final. This time the U25 Singles against fellow Sawtry bowler Matt Nickerson. The game seemed quickly to go Toby’s way and he ran out 21-9 winner 4 titles out of 5 one to go!

Rink 6 had the Ladies Senior Singles final Nicky Hastings versus Janet Chapman (both Hemingford) another smashing game. Very nip and tuck. It was a good game to win and that honour went to Nicky Hastings 21-19

The final session had five matches. There was some breeze by now and the heat wasn’t too oppressive.

Rink 1 had the Men’s Senior Singles. Richard Coles (Ramsey) fresh from his 21-1 semi final win against Bunny Johnson (Papworth) who had dealt with rink 1 at N’worth in the semis. A good game from both bowlers. Good bowls ended with a 21-17 win for Richard.

On rink 2 the Ladies 4 Bowls Singles saw Sandra Gentle (Buckden) in her 4th final of the day against Sabrina Parnell (Brampton) herself in her third singles final. This was another good match which showed some great draw bowling. Sabrina managed to capture her second county title winning 23-16

Rink 3 had the Men’s Senior Pairs which saw Malcolm Scott & sub Derek Dellar (Sawtry). (Derek subbed for Bernie Shannon who is away representing England in the Jewish games. They were against first timers Eric Verrall & Brian Fairbrother (Royal Oak). The game got away from the Royal Oak pair and they never managed to get back into the swing of it, the Sawtry pair winning 23-7

Rink 4 had the Ladies Secretaries Singles. Nicky Hastings (Hemingford) in her 3rd final hoping to add to her Senior Singles title, against Sandra Day (Somersham) who herself wanted to add this to her Senior Mixed Pairs title. Another close game. Nip and tuck all the way through but after some great bowls Nicky managed the win 21-19.

The last game of the day on Rink 6 was Toby Furzeland’s fifth and final match the Mixed Rinks. He was with fellow Sawtry bowlers Emma Gardiner and Karen Martin. Could he do it and have the perfect day? In his way were the St Ives trio of Trevor Dighton, Jane Baldwin & Robert Jepson. The game was fairly even for the first half then the St Ives trio started to take control. Try as he might Toby couldn’t turn it around and his five timer stayed as a creditable quadruple. Trevor, Jane & Robert completing the Skegness line up for Hunts winning 24-12.

Well done to all, the players, umpires, markers, St Ives members doing the Bar and the catering, the organisers and of course the spectators.

Onward to Skegness.
